  2. WOULD YOU RATHER NETFLIX SERIES

Super hero programming is either Amazon’s “The Boys” where everyone takes super-steroids and accidentally kills civilians by running through them, or it’s “Captain Planet and the Planeteers” where “with our powers combined” they can do better and cooler stuff (see: make flying silver dude with green hair appear). Except there’s a twist that led me to binge watch all of Season 1 in two days: none of their superpowers are frankly that super (or they’re too messed up emotionally or psychologically to use them), and even crazier, they don’t complement one another in a way that makes them more powerful.

“Umbrella Academy” uses a tried and true super hero formula (a professor who’s either bald or has a handlebar mustache starts a school for kids with superpowers - hi, X-Men!), adds the prerequisite action movie tropes (THE WORLD IS ENDING YOU GUYS) and then leaves this said school of superkids to save said world.

  • Because sometimes, you vaguely remember an old movie that had some sort of plot twist at the end of it, but can’t remember what it was.
  • Because sometimes, the surprise “spoiler” ending is the only reason you’d pay $11 to see what is otherwise a turkey of a film.

One by one they kill each other off until only Iris and one other man is left.Iris, who has very reluctantly played the game all night, is given a choice to either shoot the other man and win or to allow them both to leave with nothing. Iris leaves her sick brother at home and attends the party.Īlmost immediatly, it becomes obvious that the guest must hurt each other to win and they are unable to leave. The rich man also promises that he has found a donor for her brother, but she must attend the dinner and win the game. Her brother’s doctor introduces her to a very rich man who invites her to participate in a dinner followed by “a game” with other people in need of help, the winner will be taken care of for life, medically and financially. She needs money to both care for him and she needs help finding a bone marrow donor. Iris (Brittany Snow) is left to care for for sick teen brother after their parents are killed in an accident.
